Oxfam: Food Prices to Double by 2030

Think your grocery bill couldn’t possibly get higher? Think again. A new report by international aid agency Oxfam warns -- food prices will more than double in the next 20 years. Bloomberg explains:
“Food demand will rise by 70 percent by 2050 while the growth rate in agriculture yields is set to decline to less than 1 percent in the next decade...”
Al Jazeera explains the reasons behind the impending food crisis.
“Half the problem is climate change, rising temperatures and extreme weather like droughts and floods are devastating crops. Then there’s land grabs, vast tracts of agricultural land bought up by a few wealthy companies, often just to grow crops for fuel. And the failure of intensive farming. Crop yields are flat-lining, and charities say small-scale agriculture needs to be revived.”
So... what do ya do? The BBC outlines Oxfam’s call for a food system overhaul.
“Food production needs a global governance, so less is in the hands of a privileged few. Small farmers must be given wider opportunities, and there needs to be a shift in attitude, particularly in knowing where food is and where there are shortages.”
Plenty in the media have their own plan. Analysts at Fox Business suggest we stop turning food into fuel.
“These guys are blaming of course commodity traders and they’re saying that we need to regulate corn prices, and that certainly has something to do with it, but it’s also on the production side that we need to start thinking about it, and maybe we really have to have a serious conversation about ethanol.”
“Yeah, they talk about ending subsidies for bio-fuels, I like that. I don’t have a problem with that, and investing in smaller farms too.”
A blogger for The Telegraph has very different advice for politicians-- get out of the way and let the market regulate itself.
“Investors, collectively if not always individually, will respond rationally to market demand, without needing government intervention or even Oxfam hectoring. The market has delivered more food to more people than any system devised by human intelligence.”
The report also notes the world’s poorest people, who already spend nearly 80 percent of their income on food, will be hardest hit. As a Wall Street Journal commentator points out, the issue may not be productivity, but inequality.
“The apocalyptic tone struck by Oxfam’s report shows an increasing urgency in the pleas of the international aid community for change... Addressing the needs of the world’s hungry is not only necessary; it will be the deciding factor in our own moral trajectory.”
